Studying at Chiba University
Student Status - At the undergraduate level there are regular undergraduate students, auditing students and special auditing students ; at the graduate level, there are regular postgraduate students and research students.
Academic Calendar - The academic year is from April to March. The first semester begins on April 1 and ends on September 30, and the second semester begins on October I and ends on March31.
Time of admission - Admission for regular undergraduate and postgraduate students is in April and for other students in April or October.
How to Apply - Prerequisites, time of application and selection criteria are different for students having different statuses. For details, contact the relevant faculty office.
Classes - Most classes at Chiba University are offered in Japanese. The only exception is our new short-term exchange program called Japan Program at Chiba (J-PAC) under which classes are offered in English.
Undergraduate overseas students are required to obtain a number of credits in Japanese language and Japanese culture. Other international students except short-term exchange students may choose to take supplementary Japanese language courses if they so wish ; however, they will not be granted any credit for these courses.
Short-term Student
Exchange - The short-term student exchange program is a non-degree program for international students who are enrolled at an institution of higher education that has a student exchange agreement with Chiba University and who wish to study in order to learn Japanese and to experience Japanese culture.
Students may obtain credits by course work or by having their research supervised for one semester (half-year program) or for two semesters (full-year program) .
Those students whose Japanese language proficiency is relatively high may be directly admitted to a faculty or graduate school and enroll in regular university courses.
In October 1996, Chiba University is launching a new short-term international student exchange program J-PAC (Japan Program at Chiba) .
The program will accommodate a total of twenty undergraduate students, ten in the fields of humanities and social sciences and ten in the fields of engineering and natural sciences.
How to Apply - Those students who wish to apply for one of our short-term student exchange programs should submit their applications for both university admission and Association of International Education, Japan scholarship at their home university {see also 7 (2) }.
Scholarships - Two major scholarships available to overseas students are Japanese Government (Mombusho) Scholarships and Association of International Education, Japan Scholarships.
- (1) Japanese Government (Mombusho) Scholarships
- Recommendation by Japanese Embassy (arrival in April or October)
The Japanese government requests its overseas embassies and/or consulates to advertise study in Japan on the Mombusho Scholarship and to conduct preliminary selection of candidates. The preliminary selection includes (1) selection based on submitted academic records and personal history, and (2) an interview. Based on the results of the above selection process the Japanese embassy and/or consulate then recommends candidates for scholarships to Mombusho, where final decision is made. For further information, contact the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate. - Recommendation by Chiba University (arrival in October or January)
Pursuant to exchange agreements or similar agreements concluded between Chiba University and foreign universities/colleges, Chiba University may recommend to Mombusho the provision of a Mombusho scholarship to those foreign students admitted to postgraduate courses who show exceptional academic ability and who are considered in need of financial assistance. The final decision is made by Mombusho. - Scholarships
A monthly stipend of \141,500 (undergraduate level) or \184,500 (graduate level) , round-trip air fare from the student's home country to Japan and back, a settling-in allowance of \50,000, and research-trip fare are provided. Such scholarship students do not have to pay entrance examination fee, admission fee or tuition fee.
- Recommendation by Japanese Embassy (arrival in April or October)
- (2) Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program by Association of International Education, Japan Scholarship (AIEJ Scholarships)
- Eligibility
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an institution of higher education in one of the countries listed by AIEJ which has a student exchange agreement with Chiba University. - Period
